The Sue Lane Room

Sue Lane

Secretary of the Victoria Hall from 1993 to 2018. (25 years)

Sue Lane moved to Sutton Scotney in 1976 and lived in Witts Cottage, the thatched house right next to the Victoria Hall.  She watched with interest, and growing despair, as she saw this beautiful 1897 village hall  fall into disrepair.  She joined the small band of dedicated locals who watched over it realising there was nothing for it but to get involved herself.   In 1993 having retired from her very demanding role with a local authority she offered her services and became the secretary. She remained in this role until 2018, twenty five years of time consuming and demanding work.

She completely reorganised the constitution and transformed the building.  She was responsible for organising the rebuilding of the meeting room,  upgrading the toilets and kitchen at a cost of £400,000. This involved acquiring a grant of £300,000 and raising the final £100,000 through a whole series of fund raising events , as many as six events a year, as well as finding  other pockets of funding including the many generous folks of the parish.

It is agreed that without her efforts it is likely the hall would have been demolished and the village would have lost  this amazing resource. For this reason alone we have decided to mark her amazing contribution to the village by renaming the meeting room   "The Sue Lane Room" as a lasting reminder of her contribution to the life and well being of the village.

Sue continues to be a loyal supporter of the hall and in November 2024 she organised and paid for the much needed "tree work" in the hall car park. The display cabinet in "The Sue Lane Room" is another example of her generosity.

At the AGM on the 27th January 2025 the meeting room was formally renamed "The Sue Lane Room". (See News Item below moved from Home Page)
